First seen when I was in college, Side Dishes for Italian Sausage is one of my favorite parts of being a college student. While many of my other college friends were busy creating piles of delicious pasta dishes, the Italian sausage sandwich was left on the table and overlooked. When I received my first copy of Fine Italian Cooking: The Culinary Tricks of the Top Chefs, my parents were impressed with my knowledge of Italian cooking. They decided to get me an Italian cookbook to learn more about the different types of foods that we enjoyed. After all, I was going to be a professional chef one day.
My Italian cookbook gave me many new recipes that I had never tried before. This was a great start, but many of my favorite side dishes for Italian sausage were still missing something that I had never tried. Italian sausage is such a versatile food that there are so many different ways to make it. Knowing this, it can be somewhat of a challenge to try and create the perfect meal using the different ingredients that are available. If you are looking for some ideas for your next Italian sausage sandwich, keep reading and find out what some of your favorite Italian sausage sandwiches have to offer.
Side Dishes For Italian Sausage
Salami and Swiss make wonderful sides dishes for Italian sausage, but they don’t have to be boring. For example, instead of ham or bacon, why not use ham or swiss as both are great ingredients for a savory sausage sandwich. One key to making a great Salami/Swiss sandwich is using fresh chopped prosciutto and fresh tomato sauce on the bread. By using a lot of tomatoes in the mixture, you can cut down on the number of carbs in the sausage, while still allowing the flavors to really shine through.
Feta is another healthy Italian sausage recipe that can be used for breakfast or a delicious meal. Using whole wheat bread is a good way to ensure that you don’t use too many eggs in your dish, and to cut down on unhealthy fats. While fettuccine is great for breakfast, many people enjoy it for its amazing flavor and healthy ingredients. This dish can be served cold, and if you decide to serve it warm, just remember to mix the spinach in with the fettuccine to get a more authentic look.
Farinatta is a delicious dish that many Italians love to prepare. It’s a traditional side dish for any type of sausage and can be used with chicken, sausage, or even pork. Farinatta is made by mixing eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt in a blender, then adding chopped or ground veal or ground turkey. You’ll also want to add some chopped onions or mushrooms depending on your preference.

Lasagna is another great dish that is easily prepared, and even easy to cook. Just remember that you need to have a good base of sauce before putting your ingredients together. Start by making your tomato sauce, and then add your herbs, spices, vegetables, meat, and cheeses to create your wonderful lasagna. You can also choose to include potatoes and/or broccoli for additional nutritional value. Remember to serve your pasta with your main dish, and your cheese and tomato sauce will be a nice compliment to this meal as well.
Another one of Italy’s famous side dishes for Italian sausage is the eggplant Parmesan. This dish is actually very easy to make and has a wonderful flavor. If you have an Italian garden, then this is a dish that you should definitely try. Simply cut your eggplant in half, and then scoop out the seeds and the skin, and cut them into clean little pieces.
